A&M Hymn #67: Word Supreme, before creation

Complete lyrics, stanzas, and pipe organ accompaniment • Hymns Ancient & Modern

1
The Word with God is One.
Upon the Saviour's loving Breast
Invited to recline,
'Twas thence he drew, in moments
2
Rich stores of truth Divine :
And thence did that angelic love
His inmost spirit fill,
Which, once enkindled from above,
3
Breathes in his pages still.
Jesu, the Virgin's Holy Son-,
We praise Thee and adore,
Who art with God the Father One
4
And Spirit evermore. Anieu.
Q*f " The disciple whom Jesus loved."
Word Supreme, before creation
Born of God eternally,
5
Who didst will for our salvation
To be born on earth, and die ;
Well Thy Saints have kept their sta-
Watching till Thine hour drew nigh.
6
Now 'tis come, and faith espies Thee;
Like an eaclet in the morn,
One in steadfast worship eves Thee,
Thy beloved, Thy latest born :
7
In Thy glory he descries Thee
Reigning "from the Tree of scorn.
ST. STEF HEN'S DAY.
P He upon Thy Bosom lying
8
Thy true tokens leai ' "
And Thy dearest pledj
Thy true tokens learn 'd by heart ;
!id Thy dearest pledge in dying,
9
Lord. Thou didst to him impart ;
He first, hoping and believing,
Did beside the grave adore ;
Latest he, the warfare leaving,
10
Landed on the eternal shore ;
And his witness we receiving
Own Thee Lord for evermore.
Much he ask'd in loving wonder,
11
On Thy Bosom leaning, Lord;
In that secret place of thunder
Answer kind didst Thou accord,
Wisdom for Thy Church to ponder
12
Till the day o"f dread award.
Lo ! Feav'n's doors lift up, revealing
How Thy judgments earthward
ove ;
13
Scrolls unfolded, trumpets pealing,
Wine cups from the wrath above ;
Yet o'er all a soft voice stealing—
" Little children, trust and love ! "
14
Thee, the Almighty King Eternal,
Father of the Eternal Word,
Thea, the Father's Word Supernal,
Thee, of Both, the Breath adored,
15
Heaven, and earth, and realms in-
ernal
Own One glorious God and Lord.
15
Amen.
