A&M Hymn #97: Sing, my tongue, the glorious battle

Complete lyrics, stanzas, and pipe organ accompaniment • Hymns Ancient & Modern

1
Sing the last, the dread affrav ;
O'er the Cross, the Victor's trophy,
Sound the high triumphal lay,
T> How. the p uns of death enduring,
2
Earth's Redeemer won the clay.
He, our Maker, deeply grieving
That the first-made Adam fell,
When he ate the fruit forbidden
3
Whose reward was death and hell,
Mark'd e'en then this Tree the ruin
Of the first tree to dispel.
Thus the work for our salvation
4
He ordained to be done ;
To the traitor's art opposing
Art yet deeper than his own ;
Thence the remedy procuring
5
Whence the fatal wound begun.
Therefore, when at length the fulness
Of the appointed time was come,
He was sent, the world's Creator,
6
From the Father's heavenly home,
And was found in human fashion,
Offspring of the Virgin's womb.
Lo ! He lies, an Infant weeping,
7
Where the narrow manger stands,
While the Mother-Maid His members
Wraps in mean and lowly bands.
And the swaddling clothes is winding
8
Round His helpless Feet and Hands.
Now the thirty years accomplish'd
Which on earth He wiU'd to see,
Born for this, He meets His Passion,
9
Gives Himself an Offering free ;
On the Cross the Lamb is lilted,
There the Sacrifice to be.
There the nails and spear He suffers,
10
Vinegar, and call, and reed ;
From His sacred Body pierced
Blood and Water both proceed ;
Precious flood, which all creation
11
From the stain of sin hath freed.
Faithful Cross, above all other
One and only noble Tree,
None in foliage, none in blossom,
12
None in fruit thy peer may be ;
Sweetest wood, and sweetest iron ;
Sweetest weight is hung on thee.
Bend, 0 lofty Tree, thy branches,
13
Thy too rigid sinews bend ;
And awhile the stubborn hardness.
Which thy birth bestow'd, suspend :
And the Limbs of Heav'n's high Mon-
14
Gently on thine aims extend,
?n/Thou alone was counted worthy
This world's ransom to sustain,
That a shipwreck'd race for ever
15
Might a port of refuge gain,
With the sacred Blood anointed
Of the Lamb for sinners slain.
Praise and honour to the Father,
16
Praise and honour to the Son,
Praise and honour to the Spirit,
Ever Three and ever One,
One in might, and One in glory,
While eternal ages run.
16
Amen.
