A&M Hymn #358: From Greenland's icy mountains

Complete lyrics, stanzas, and pipe organ accompaniment • Hymns Ancient & Modern

1
From Greenland's icy mountains,
From India's coral strand,
Where Afric's sunny fountains
Roll down their golden sand,
2
From many an ancient river,
From many a palmy plain,
They call us to deliver
Their land from error's chain.
3
What though the spicy breezes
Blow soft o'er Ceylon's isle,
Though every prospect pleases
And only man is vile,
4
ln vain with lavish kindness
The gifts of God are strown,
The heathen in his blindness
Bows down to wood and stone.
5
Ca-n we, whose souls are lighted
With wisdom from on high,
Can we to men benighted
The lamp of life deny ?
6
Salvation ! oh, salvation !
The joyful sound proclaim,
Till each remotest nation
Has learn 'd Messiah's name.
7
# Waft, waft, ye winds, His story.
And you, ye waters, roll,
Till, like a sea of glory,
It spreads from pole to pole ;
8
Till o'er our ransom'd nature
Redeemer, King, Creator,
In bliss returns to reign. Amen
"So shall He sprinkle many nations."
9
Saviour, sprinkle many nations.
Fruitful let Thy sorrows be;
By Thy pains and consolations
Draw the Gentiles unto Thee :
10
Of Thy Cross the wondrous story,
Be it to the nations told ;
Let them see Thee in Thy glory,
And Thy mercy manifold.
11
?n/Far and wide, though all unknow-
Pants for Thee each mortal breast ;
Human tears for Thee are flowing,
Human hearts in Thee would rest ;
12
Thirsting, as for dews of even,
As the new-mown grass for rain,
Thee they seek, as God of Heaven,
Thee, as Man, for sinners slain.
13
Saviour, lo ! the isles are waiting,
Stretch 'd the hand, and strain 'd the
For Thy Spirit new creating,
Love's pure flame and wisdom's
14
Give the word, and of the preacher
Speed the foot, and touch the
ngue,
Till en earth by every creature
15
Glory to the Lamjj be sung. Amen
"And God said, Let there be light ; and
3SQ there was light."
Tnou, Whose Almighty Word
16
Chaos and darkness heard,
And took their Might ;
Hear us, we humbly pray,
And where the Gospel-day
17
Sheds not its glorious ray,
Let there be light.
Thou, Who didst come to bring
On Thv redeeming wing
18
Healing and sight,
Health to the sick in mind,
Sight to the inly blind,
Oh ! now to all mankind
19
Let there be light.
Spirit of truth and love,
Life-giving, Holy Dove,
Speed forth Thy flight :
20
Move on the waters' face,
Bearing the lamp of crace,
And in earth's darkest place
Let there be light.
21
trf Holy and Blessed Three,
Glorious Trinity,
Wisdom, Love, Might ;
Boundless as ocean's tide
22
Rolling in fullest pride,
Through the earth, far and wide,
Let there be light.
22
Amen.
